Now Huntsham Court is an award winning Devon wedding venue and a country house party venue but the building itself has a long history. In 1760 the Huntsham Estate was bought by William Troyte after a good marriage to Lady Cecily Acland, widow of the 6th Baronet, Sir Hugh Acland of Killerton. The Estate subsequently passed into the hands of their son the Revd. Dr Edward Troyte. The Estate became the property of the 11th Baronet, who was required to take the Troyte name as part of the inheritance. The Estate then passed to his son Charles Arthur William Troyte who aged 21 married the 18 yr old Katherine Walrond of Bradfield Nr Cullompton. Her family did not think the derelict Tudor mansion fit for their daughter and in 1868 the Huntsham Court was built under the guidance of Benjamin Ferrey one of the founder members of the British Institute of Architects.
It is worth noting given its current use that Huntsham Court was quite literally built for a bride.
The House was inherited by Charles and Katherine’s eldest son Hugh in 1896. Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Leonard Acland Troyte, educated at Eton proceeded to India with his Battalion in 1914 and after much strenuous service was invalided home from Mesopotamia. In 1916, attached to the General Staff during service in Italy and France, he was killed in action at St Venant on 17 April 1918 whilst helping to evacuate the civilian population from the village and was buried in Berguette Churchyard in France.
His brother Gilbert inherited and subsequently became MP for Tiverton.
In more recent years whilst being a Devon wedding venue since the early naughties, the House has played host to numerous personalities, musicians and writers as well as a Russian spy called Oleg and was a hotel for numerous years. Douglas Adams most famously worked on his book ‘So Long and Thanks for all the Fish’ whilst at Huntsham. This was the fourth book in his Trilogy, the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Liam Gallagher also filmed his “Shine a Light” video here in 2013.
Now the house is most often rented as a mid week and weekend exclusive use Devon wedding venue or private house party venue for two or more nights.
