It can only mean one thing\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\"><strong>Valentine\u2019s Day is here!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a tradition we embrace (some more willingly than others)\nevery year, but do we ever stop to consider where Valentine\u2019s Day originated\nfrom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day actually owes its name to a famous saint, St Valentine. It\nis believed St Valentine was a priest from Rome during the third century AD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this particular time, the Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage amongst his troops as he believed married men were bad soldiers and demanded they remain bachelors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Valentine felt this was unfair and decided to break the\nrules. He became a love vigilante and arranged marriages for\nstar-crossed-lovers in secret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was only a matter of time until Claudius found out. When\nValentine was discovered to be conducting marriages in secret, he was thrown in\njail and sentenced to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was in jail Valentine fell in love with the jailer\u2019s daughter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day he was sent to his death, the 14<sup>th<\/sup> of Feb, he left her a love letter which was simply signed \u2018From your Valentine\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photo: Michelle Wood Photography<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The shops are bursting with heart emblazoned cards, cuddly toys and dozens upon dozens of red roses.
