Heather & Martin

Heather & Martin said ‘I do’ in October 2022 in front of a small, intimate number of guests.

Their wedding weekend was centred around close friends and family, enjoying good food, good wine and good company.

We caught up with Heather & Martin to learn more about their wedding celebration and what made it so unique and special for them.

How did you discover Huntsham Court and why were we the venue for you?

Heather – I spent a lot of time searching the internet and communicating with venues for the ideal location, we were not to fussed about specific location, we just wanted it to be right for us and our guests who were travelling from various locations across England.

We had an idea of what we wanted, ideally exclusive use, intimate and just the right number of bedrooms for the number of guests (25).

A lot of venues came up short with either too many bedrooms or not enough, location too remote or too central, no flexibility, very rigid in their offerings and we just didn’t get the gut feeling ‘this is it’!

Huntsham appeared on my last search, we looked at the website and liked the look of the house, the grounds and thought location would be reasonable for all the guests.

So we booked an appointment to view.

As soon as we were greeted by Jennifer (our eventual wedding planner) we were 50% there with our decision. After introductions and a brief review of what we were hoping for our day, Jennifer gave us a full tour of Huntsham. The team were in the throws of turning the house round from the last event in preparation for the next, everyone we came across was welcoming and friendly.

The house was wonderful, a home to relax in but grand with it, quirky in places with everything that you would need and more on hand.

Above all, we were able to see our vision could come true here.

The rooms were totally individual and beautifully decorated throughout.

We sat in the bar area after the tour and chatted some more about what was available. Jennifer was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and had the perfect balance of interaction. There was no sales pitch, purely this is a home that you can make your own.

What I really liked is this is the only venue that was so flexible, with different levels of hiring the house, fully staffed, some help, pick your suppliers, all exclusively yours! We only required the smallest number of bedrooms and it all seemed so easy, simply closing of the additional bedrooms that aren’t required.

With options of where the ceremony could be held, we were sold on the Great Hall in front of the fire place straight away!

We took one look at each as we walked to the car and knew we had found our dream venue, but we left without booking…

As soon as we drove out down the drive I looked up mid Devon registrars, made the call, they sent me an email to complete the booking (we couldn’t book Huntsham in case we were unable to secure a registrar!) by the time we had reached our overnight accommodation, the registrar was confirmed and we went straight back to Jennifer to secure our dates!

From start to finish Huntsham made everything simple and enjoyable to plan, the level of professionalism, knowledge, support and guidance was second to none.

Our wedding was everything we wished for and more!

Heather and Martin, how did you pick your suppliers?

We have a mantra we try and stick to, always go by first thoughts and gut feel. We selected all our suppliers from the extensive list of options Huntsham offer.

We reviewed all on the various Recommended Supplier website links, we felt that they would know the venue and understand what works, making the planning process easier. We were not disappointed and we chose following our mantra, truly believing we had the dream team of suppliers.
We would highly recommend, Mark and Katie – Milkshed Catering, Sophie – Earth Gallery florist and Mark & Tristan – Evolve Photography. All amazing phenomenal in their chosen fields.
Changing faces – Sarah for hair and Charlotte for make up

You kept numbers to an intimate mix of just close family and friends, which created a beautiful atmosphere on the day. Tell us more about your decision to keep it to a select group of guests and why it worked so well for you.

We kept the numbers small on purpose. Martin and I don’t like being centre of attention, so our vision was to have a weekend away with our close family and friends to say thank you for supporting us through our journey together (13 years at the time of the wedding – we didn’t take getting married lightly) and then drop a wedding ceremony into the mix.
Whilst this was a very difficult decision – we have large extended families and a wide eclectic mix of friends, we knew it would overwhelm us and we wanted to stay true to ourselves and who we are.
We also didn’t want the ceremony to be rigid or overly serious. We chose not to have formal seating, we kept the sofa’s in the hall with some additional relaxed chairs for the guests. Whilst it had never been done this way, Jennifer took our vision on board and make it work brilliantly, this was the perfect fit for us!

What were those special moments during your stay that you look back on now?

There are so many, it’s very hard to choose. We had a relaxed, fun Friday eve with magician entertainment which settled everyone into the ethos of the house.

Milkshed, catered for the whole weekend in the end, we were only going to use them for the wedding breakfast, but once we spent time with them it became clear we wanted them to cater for everything and they didn’t disappoint. They made some very personal touches for us that really resonated, showing their care attention to detail and dedication.

Martin loved the laser clay pigeon shooting with Brian on the Saturday morning along with all the guests that took part, as this provided a distraction for those without ‘wedding tasks’ before getting ready for the ceremony.

For me, I loved getting ready in The Douglas room. This is a fantastic and spacious room ideal for the wedding party to get ready together. I will never forget those final moments in the room once everyone had left, waiting for my brother feeling extremely nervous, and then his support walking from the room and down the main stairs and into the hall.

The ceremony itself, we went for traditional vows, but the atmosphere was chilled and comfortable. I beamed from the moment I set eyes on Martins to the minute we walked back up the room as Mr & Mrs.
Having everyone seated round one table for the wedding breakfast and the amazing table that Sophie dressed for us, it was inclusive and stunning!

Overall, what really made it for us was how brilliant the suppliers and Huntsham staff were, they were friendly and chatty and became part of the group rather than suppliers which made for the relaxed and friendly vibe we wanted. Billy even offering his hard earned cash to the magician for a trick as none of our guests had any cash on them!

Lastly, the feedback we have had from every single one of our guests, they have all said what a fabulous weekend wedding it was and loved every part of it, saying we had thought of everything and nothing could have been any better than it was.
I believe this is down to Martin and I sticking to what our vision was and not deviating, plus the tremendous suppliers and Huntsham teams for all their support guidance and care.

Do you have a favourite spot in the venue?

Again, several!
The Great Hall is a stunning room where we said our vows.
The Bar snug for its cosy and intimate space.
The grounds are perfect for pictures, particularly when we now look back and enjoy seeing the house within the image.
The Diamond room, where we had the wedding breakfast (we kept this room closed till we went in for the meal to get the full effect of how stunning the table looked).
The Douglas room and bathroom with its twin baths!
The Butlers pantry, for its versatility and availability for guest to use and help themselves.
The front of the house, ideal for evening fire pits and socialising outside.
The whole venue is very very special.

Do you have any advice for future couples planning a wedding at Huntsham Court?

Listen to the team, use their knowledge, and guidance. Remember they are experts and know what they are doing. Tell them your vision and requirements and let them help you, they will make it work.
Where possible, try to use suppliers recommended by Huntsham, they know the venue and how to make it work to its full potential.
Use the house for what it is designed for, a home from home for that special occasion to celebrate. Enjoy every minute you are there, as time really does fly when you are having the best time!
