Action Medical Research for Children

Many thousands of families across the UK are coping with the relentless daily challenge of supporting a child affected by a disabling condition. Action Medical Research for Children are funding over 75 projects at leading hospitals, universities and specialist centres across the UK. They have supported some of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent history that have helped save and change children’s lives. These are just some of the many many conditions that this charity helps to address.

Asthma: Around 1.1 million children in the UK have asthma, a lifelong condition that can cause coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness.

Brain cancer: Every year in the UK, around 400 children are diagnosed with brain cancer. Many face prolonged and gruelling treatment with surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Cerebral palsy: Around 1,800 babies are diagnosed with cerebral palsy every year in the UK.

Down syndrome: Every year, around 750 babies in the UK are born with Down syndrome, a genetic condition which causes some level of learning disability.

Heart disease: Around one in every 150 babies in the UK is born with a heart defect, a problem which doctors call congenital heart disease.

Premature birth: Over 60,000 babies are born prematurely in the UK every year. Premature birth is the biggest killer of babies in the UK.
